Verse of the Day – John 1:12 | Becoming a Child of God

Greetings & Introduction

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, my warm greetings to you all! Today we will take our hearts and thoughts to a very powerful promise given to us by our God Himself through John, the disciple of His beloved Son Jesus Christ which we can read in JOHN 1:12. This verse brings hope, warmth (affection, love, joy, enthusiasm) and clarity to every thirsty soul that is looking for identity, belonging and faith. THIS VERSE SAYS, “But to all who received Him, He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” What a beautiful truth isn’t it my friends!

This is not just a promise, it is a divine invitation from our Creator to all of us.  Taking us into a world where people often feel overlooked and ignored, this verse tells us how when we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are not only accepted, but adopted as sons into the family of God. It is not a matter of any religion or ritual, but a matter of accepting Jesus Christ with true faith and believing in His name.

You may feel distant, unworthy or forgotten by your Creator today. But as soon as you accept the Lord Jesus and believe in His name, something amazing happens, you get the right to become a child of God, a gift from God to the whole world, something that can neither be earned nor bought. So today’s verse will remind you of the truth that you are not alone, and your identity is not in your past or performance. Your true identity is in the One who gives you the right to call you His child, that is, in Christ Jesus. Let us understand this verse deeply and take it personally into our hearts.

TITLE : Becoming a Child of God

 BOOK : John

Author: John

 Chapter: 1

 VERSE : 12

But as Many As Received Him, to them He Gave The Right to become Children of God, to those who Believe In His Name. John 1:12 (NKJV)

Context Of The Chapter

The Gospel of John begins not with the birth of Jesus Christ, but with a deep spiritual truth that the Lord Jesus is the eternal Word, the divine Light, and the Life. The first chapter of John tells us that when Jesus Christ, the Creator who created the whole world, came into the world, the world did not recognize Him. In the midst of this rejection, John 1:12 shines among us as a ray of hope.

This verse tells us that no matter what his background is, if he accepts the Lord Jesus, he is given the right to become a child of God. This chapter takes us from rejection to acceptance, from darkness to light, and from creation to a new creation. Here John distinguishes those who rejected Jesus from those who accepted Him. This verse tells us that faith brings new life and a new identity to every human being.

John 1:12 - Commentary

But as many as received Him- This phrase tells us that not everyone accepted Christ’s coming into the world. Some denied His coming, while some accepted Him wholeheartedly. Here “receive” is not merely knowing or believing outwardly, but accepting from the innermost soul. It means that a person accepts Him as the King of his spirit, and submits every aspect of his life to Him. And in fact it is more than just accepting, it is an act of complete submission, submission and trust. These are the people who accept His identity and work as their salvation.

To them He gave authority- The word translated “authority” here actually comes from the Greek “ἐξουσίαν” (exousian), which means not just permission, but constitutional privilege. It is no ordinary thing for a human being to be called a child of God, it is a position of extremely high status and dignity. My beloved, this authority is an extraordinary grace in itself.  Christians are called children of God because: They have been adopted by faith (Galatians 4:5). They now have the Holy Spirit indwelling them, making them like God. They are counted as part of the same family, becoming brothers and sisters with Christ. This verse reminds us that this honor is greater than any earthly honor. A poor,  Even an illiterate but believing person is more honorable than a king if he or she is God's son or daughter through faith in Christ.

That is, those who believe in His name- This statement makes clear what "receive" really means, "to believe in His name." "Name" in the Bible refers to a person's entire identity, character, and scope. So for us believers to believe in the "name" of Christ is not just to believe in His existence, but to believe in His entire purpose, including His coming to this earth as Savior. And believing and receiving Christ are one and the same thing, they are two aspects of the same experience. This act of faith is not a mere intellectual assent on the part of a human being, but a commitment of the heart. Believing in the name of Christ is to admit that He is the only way man can be reconciled to God. And it is this faith that opens the door to that great privilege, to become a child of God. This privilege is priceless, cannot be earned, it is received only by faith.  It gives us a new name, a new identity, and a new home, called the family of God.

John 1:12 - Application to Life

Living as a child of God begins with daily devotion. When we truly believe and receive the name of Jesus Christ, our conduct changes. We used to walk in the world lost and without hope and purpose, but now we live with purpose, trust, hope and humility. Begin each day with the reminder: “I am a child of God.” From now on, let this truth influence how you face stress, how you treat others and how you view yourself. Being a child of God gives us the assurance that we are never alone. In struggles we can confidently approach Him. In joys we can thank our Creator that we are His beloved children. This recognition also motivates us to love others. We are to accept others as we have been accepted.

Read your Bible daily, pray, don’t forget to thank your Heavenly Father and follow His commandments.  Let your life be a reflection of the grace you have received freely through Christ. When you live in this recognition, you will find peace and clarity. And from now on, live as if you belong to God and believe me, dear ones, because we truly are.

John 1:12 - Prayer

Good morning, dear Father. O heavenly Father in heaven, thank you for this beautiful morning. And thank you for my life, my breath, and your gracious presence in my life. Above all, I thank you for the wonderful truth of your verse today, John 1:12. I have received the right to be called your child because by accepting the Lord Jesus and believing in His name, I have received the right to be called your child. This truth has made this beginning of the day even more precious to me.

Lord, I dedicate this day to you. Let you guide my thoughts, my decisions, and my actions. Keep reminding me that I am yours, because you have lovingly given me this gift, not that I have earned it. When I am weak or confused, remind me of this truth again, and if I stray, bring me back.

Merciful Father, help me to grow in love, patience, and mercy today, just as you did.  Let the joy of being Your Son shine through my life and reach others. Let me be a light in someone's darkness and a voice of hope to a discouraged soul.

Father, I bring my family, friends and all the people I will meet into Your presence today. Comfort those who are hurting, give peace to those in trouble. And let those who are lost know that they too can be Your children through the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank You Lord, that You have called me by name and included me in Your eternal family. Let this truth guide my every step today. I love You, and I rejoice that I am Yours, today, and forever. In Jesus Christ's name I pray, Amen."
